1. “Stop crying — it’s not a big deal.”
❌ What the child hears: “My feelings don’t matter.”
✅ Better: “I can see you’re upset. Let’s talk about what happened.”
2. “Good job!” (used too often)
❌ What the child hears: “I only matter when I perform.”
✅ Better: “You worked really hard on that!” or “You must be proud of yourself.”
3. “Because I said so.”
❌ What the child hears: “My opinion doesn’t count.”
✅ Better: “Here’s why this rule is important…” — it builds understanding, not obedience.
4. “You’re fine.”
❌ What the child hears: “Don’t trust your feelings.”
✅ Better: “That looked like it hurt — are you okay?”
5. “Why can’t you be more like your brother/sister?”
❌ What the child hears: “You’re not good enough.”
✅ Better: “I love that you do things in your own way.”
6. “Hurry up!”
❌ What the child hears: “I’m always too slow.”
✅ Better: “Let’s see if we can get ready together quickly.”
7. “You’re so smart!”
❌ What the child hears: “If I fail, I’m not smart anymore.”
✅ Better: “You figured that out — your effort really paid off.”
8. “Don’t be shy.”
❌ What the child hears: “Something’s wrong with how I feel.”
✅ Better: “It’s okay to take your time — you’ll join when you’re ready.”
